The new playground at Westerman Park is open and ready for use by kids of all ages!
This playground was a key goal identified by the Lennox Park Board in 2024, and supported by donations from many community members. The manufacturer was able to provide a grant to the City of Lennox for the equipment, providing a much larger playground than the City could have otherwise afforded.
The playground includes activities for children of many ages, but is built specifically for children ages 2 – 12. The design is meant to enhance the social and physical capabilities of the community, and continue serving as a central gathering place for families, friends, and visitors.
One of the most immediate benefits of the new playground is the opportunity it creates for children to engage in active play. Physical activity is essential for children's physical and mental development, and playgrounds offer a fun and accessible environment where they can run, climb, swing, and explore. These types of play help build coordination, strength, and confidence. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and sedentary activities, the importance of outdoor play cannot be overstated. A new playground provides a vital space for local kids to stay active and healthy.
Beyond physical benefits, a new playground also serves as a powerful tool for social development. Playgrounds naturally encourage social interaction among children. As they navigate slides, play games, or build imaginary worlds together, children learn to share, take turns, resolve conflicts, and build friendships. For younger children, especially, playgrounds can be their first experience in community-based social learning outside of school or daycare. This social development lays a foundation for cooperation and empathy later in life.
The new playground is part of a multi-year investment to beautify the park areas in Lennox. In addition to the playground, volunteers have planted over 20 trees, aged equipment has and is being removed, and park facilities such as the campground are being refreshed. Last but not least, the Lennox Park Board has recommended the approval of a work order creating a Master Park Plan to guide park and recreational growth for years to come.
