In response to the severe storms that impacted South Dakota from June 16 to July 8, 2024, the President issued a federal disaster declaration (DR-4807-SD) on August 15, 2024. This declaration opens up various forms of disaster assistance for individuals, families, businesses, and local governments within the affected areas. The City of Lennox encourages all residents who sustained damages from the storms to apply for Individual Assistance through federal programs aimed at easing the recovery process.
Individual Assistance
Residents of Lennox who have experienced property damage or other losses due to the storms have several options for seeking help. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has set up a Disaster Recovery Center at the Canton Depot, located at 600 W 5th Street, to provide personalized support. At this center, FEMA specialists, along with representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), are available to:
Provide information on the different types of disaster assistance available.
Explain eligibility criteria for various programs.
Assist individuals with the completion of applications for federal disaster aid.
The Disaster Recovery Center's hours of operation are as follows:
Monday through Friday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Saturday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Sunday: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM
In addition to visiting the center in person, residents can apply for disaster assistance through several other convenient channels. Applications can be submitted online at www.disasterassistance.gov, through the FEMA mobile app, or by calling the FEMA Disaster Assistance Hotline at 800-621-FEMA (3362).
Public Assistance for the City of Lennox
In addition to individual aid, the disaster declaration also makes Public Assistance available to the City of Lennox. City officials have already begun preliminary consultations with FEMA to address costs related to emergency response efforts during the storms. This funding will help the city recoup expenses for emergency protective measures, such as debris removal, emergency pumps, and repairs to public infrastructure. These efforts were essential in safeguarding the community during the storms.
