Remember to be safe, enjoy yourselves, and get home safely.

St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most popular holidays in the United States, the holiday is heavily celebrated by most people with friendly pinches, bangers n’ mash, and green beer galore. Sadly, all this merry-making can lead to dangerous driving conditions as party-goers head home.

Remember, it’s not just about you! Other people on the roads also want to get to their destination safely. Don’t let alcohol and or drug impairment cause you to be a risk to yourself and others on the road. Impaired driving is an act of selfishness. Before you put your keys in the ignition, remind yourself: “Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. If you feel a buzz, you are in no shape to drive.”

Police, Sheriff, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.

In addition to looking for alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers, the Lennox Police Department will be stepping up seat-belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat-belt usage rates are lowest. Speeding, distracted driving and other traffic laws will also be strictly enforced.

The Lennox Police Department has a few suggestions for those who intend on participating in activities.

While designating a sober driver is the simplest way to avoid a tragic crash or DUI arrest, here are some additional tips to help you keep yourself and others safe:

·       Drunk or high, it doesn’t matter. It is never okay to drive impaired. Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.

  • If a friend is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help them get home safely.

  • If you do not have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home, call a cab, sober friend, or family member to pick you up or stay where you are and sleep it off until you are sober.

  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, pull over safely and call 911.

  • Always buckle up – it is your best defense in a crash.

  • Remember, pedestrians are at risk, too. If you’re walking, keep an eye out for cars. If you’re driving, remain alert for impaired walkers who may not obey street signs.

The Lennox Police department wants everyone to have a fun and safe night. If you follow these very easy things you will ensure your safety and the safety of others.

Thank you!
